BOOK REVIEW: “BOOKS THAT BUILD CHARACTER”

My love of reading to my children has developed over many years.  During that time, we have read so many books together that I began a search for more than just a love of reading for my children, and increase in comprehension and vocabulary, but a search for stories that would influence their lives.  Stories that would get them to, “think” about cause and effect and how that applies to their lives.

In my quest, I came across ”Books That Build Character”, A Guide To Teaching Your Child Moral Values Through Stories, by William Kilpatrick, Geregory and Suzanne M. Wolfe.  The first few chapters give reasons as to why  sharing stories that have a moral message are important and the best way to share those stories.  Most of the book is a list of suggested books and a review of stories and the message the stories contain.

One of the favorite books we read as a family was “Where the Red Fern Grows”.  My children loved the story and learned allot about honesty, loyalty, hard work and perseverance.  Not to mention the memories we have made by reading together each night, finishing the book, and then watching the movie together afterward. (the movies are never as good as the books!)

Reading with your children is such valuable time, reading books with a message makes that time even more valuable.  If your looking to take your family reading time to the next level, give this book a try!
