logo

The History of Halloween The History ChannelHalloween is a very fun holiday, it doesn’t have to be scary!  Here are a few hints for Halloween to help make it fun for the whole family!!!

ICE CREAM WITCHES – Use a ball of ice cream for the head.  Turn a sugar cone upside down for the witch’s hat.  Decorate using chocolate chips for eyes, candy corn for a nose, raisins for a mouth, orange coconut for hair. (place coconut in plastic bag with a drop of orange food coloring and mix around).  You can place these on top of a cake square, cupcake, brownie, cookie, or just place  in a cupcake liner.  Freeze,  then serve.

ORANGE-O-LANTERNS-  Use a black felt tip marker and make a face on an orange and you have a mini pumpkin.  You can also scoop out the inside, cut out a face, place a candle in and you have a mini jack-o-lantern.

PUMPKIN CAKES – Using a  bundt pan (small or large) bake two cakes.  Place one on top of the other, using frosting as a glue.  Frost orange to make look like a pumpkin.  Use almond paste or marzipan for the stem.  Cut leaf shapes out of fruit leather and place on top by the stem.  Makes a beautiful table decoration.

BEWITCHING PARTY IDEAS

Goblins of all ages are safest at a home or school party instead of trick or treating, and this bewitching party is sure to please and gang of goblins!

INVITATIONS

INVISIBLE INVITATIONS – Send ghost invitations.  Cut the invitation in the shape of a ghost and write your message using a toothpick and lemon juice.  Allow message to dry thoroughly.  It will be invisible.  Include these visible instructions, “Hold this boo-tiful invitation over a light bulb until it is warm and a message will magically appear.”  Spooky!!!

ACTIVITIES

Movies/Stories:  Here are a few ideas.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow or Halloween Treat (Disney)

Laurel and Hardy Meet Frankenstein or Ghost Busters

Something Wicked This Way Comes, or Young Frankenstein

Or, read a ghost or scary story.  Check at the library for ideas.

PAPER PLATE MASK MAKING CONTEST- Gather a variety of creative supplies; paper plates, felt pens, crayons, scissors, glue, yarn, pompons, buttons, and other notions.  Have guests make their own masks.  Punch a hole in each side of plates, add yarn so mask can be worn.  Offer prizes for the scariest, funniest, silliest, and most colorful.

PUMPKIN CARVING CONTEST- Ask guests to bring pumpkins they have carved at home.  display them at the party and have a contest with prizes.

Or, the carving can be the main party activity.  Provide cleaned out pumpkins and all the necessary equipment for cutting and guests can “go creative”

GAMES:

DONUT ON A STRING – Tie each donut to a string.  Then tack the other end of the string to the top of the doorway.  guests try to bite the donut without using their hands.  The one to eat the most of his donut wins.

MUSICAL PUMKINS- Cut out large pumpkins and place them on the floor.  Each person stands on a pumpkin.  Each time the music starts, one pumpkin is removed, and when it stops everyone must be on a pumpkin.

WITCHES SWEEP RELAY – Give the first player from the team a broom and a pair of rolled up socks.  Each player must “sweep” the socks to the goal line, sweep them back and give the broom to the next player.
